About the Department

The department started functioning in 1995, the year in which our college was established. Initially the course offered was B.Com. (Travel and Tourism) of Calicut University with a sanctioned strength of 30. Sri. Udayakumar O K was the sole faculty member and Head of the department at that time.He joined Govt. College Madappally in 2011. By the year 1997-98 the department had a faculty comprising four full time teachers and one part-time lecturer in law.

With the establishment of Kannur University in the year 1996, the college is affiliated to Kannur university. Since then the course offered is B.Com (Income tax law & Practice). With the introduction of Choice based Credit and Semester System (CCSS) in the year 2009 – 10 the course offered is B.com (Finance) with a sanctioned strength of 50 students. The Department is enriched with another UG programme – BBA in 2013. It became a PG Department when the Government and Kannur University sanctioned M.Com course in the year 2013.

In the very beginning itself the department achieved meritorious academic results. The first batch which came out in the year 1998 brought 100% results. Thereafter the department maintained good academic results and in many years the department produced toppers in the university examinations. The first university rank of our college was the contribution of our department in the form of a first rank bagged by Nisha AP in 2001 in B.Com University Examinations. In 2011 the University introduced grading system and our students secured top grades in the university examinations thereon.

The department has computer lab with 20 desk top computers with internet facility. There is a well stocked department library for students pursuing M.Com programme.

PROGRAMME OUTCOMES (PO)

1.1. Acquire the ability to apply the basic tenets of logic and science to thoughts, actions and interventions.

1.2. Develop the ability to chart out a progressive direction for actions and interventions by learning to recognize the presence of hegemonic ideology within certain dominant notions.

1.3 Develop self-critical abilities and also the ability to view positions, problems and social issues from plural perspectives.

2.1. Learn to participate in nation building by adhering to the principles of sovereignty of the nation, socialism, secularism, democracy and the values that guide a republic.

2.2. Develop and practice gender sensitive attitudes, environmental awareness, empathetic social awareness about various kinds of marginalisation and the ability to understand and resist various kinds of discriminations.

2.3. Internalise certain highlights of the nation’s and region’s history. Especially of the freedom movement, the renaissance within native societies and the project of modernisation of the post-colonial society.
